Chapter
1
I walked past the
library as I'm heading home. The lights on the street are turning on as it gets dark. The streets are packed with traffic as New Year's approaches. I don't care for
it though, it just means we're closer to death. Some streamers get in my shopping bag, I hate this place. This place is full of drugs, gangs, and violence. As I approach Pecan Drive, I notice a new recruiting station for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. 'Might as well,' I think to myself, then go to the Army station.
I walk inside and notice it's almost deserted. I move towards the desk and ring the bell. "I hate these damn things," I say to myself, as an Army officer comes to greet me. He shakes my hand, and introduces himself.
"Hi, and welcome to the army." he says, like he's thankful.
"Thanks." I reply.
He opens a cabinet and takes out a paper. Actually, A LOT of paper.
"Fill this out, please." he tells me.
I go and sit in the lobby, where there's pictures of soldiers and tanks. There's even a picture on the wall of the
President, but what does he have to do with the army? Oh well, gotta get this done first.
As I fill out the forms all the city lights go out. The officer goes into the back, then starts the back-up generator. The lights come back on, but they're the only ones on for five blocks.
A loud noise comes from outside. The officer tells me to stay put while he goes to see what it is.
'Even more reason to hate this god forsaken city.' I think. Suddenly, an explosion rips through the front
door as the officer comes running back in, then hides behind a desk. I look to my right to notice a single RPG going right where the officer had taken refuge. It explodes in a ball of fire as it makes contact with the wooden desk. Shrapnel flies everywhere, and hits part of
my body, making it bleed slowly.
I drop to the floor, and start crawling to the back storage area just behind the office. My heart is racing as I attempt to reach safety, but to no avail. A Soviet tesla trooper comes marching
in and electrocutes the charred remains of the officer. He laughs as the smell of burning flesh fills the room. I look at him, hatred in my eyes. He turns to me, but just stares. I see pain in his eyes, but he doesn't even show signs of remorse. He turns
abruptly and walks out. I crawl to the officer as a caravan drives by, and I search his body. I find a .22 pistol, an extra clip, and some papers. I start a fire with the papers, since it's starting to get pretty cold without a good heater. I look over the
pistol and remember the days I went to the shooting range with my father. We used to takes rifles and hand guns to see who had better aim, but I always lost. I go
outside and see the wreckage that the Soviet onslaught had produced. Burning buildings lit up the night sky, and cars sit
idle without anyone to drive them. I hear sirens in the distance, but they aren't moving, not getting closer or farther, just sitting there. ' Everyone must've
fled... good for them.' I think. I turn to go up the street, and notice that same tesla trooper sitting on a
bench with his helmet off. His face is scarred, and blood runs down his
face making it look like he's crying blood. He takes a glance at me, and notices the pistol. He stands up, but I put a bullet in his head before he can kill me. He falls over, and hits the bench with a loud thump.
I check over him and find a picture of a beautiful girl, probably in her thirties. Blonde hair, blue eyes, and luscious lips. The picture is in very poor condition, most likely from it being inside the suit. I open the circuit
hatch and rip all the cords. I turn to see a recon squad of conscripts heading towards me. I run back to the recruiting
station and hide behind the generator. The conscripts barge in and start shooting at everything. The pictures, the destroyed desk, then the generator. A bullet rips through some
circuitry connecting with my wrist, then going to the wall. I yell in
pain just as the power goes out once more. They start moving towards me and I shoot blindly at them. I hit one, maybe
two before one sneaks up behind me and butts me with his rifle.
