Silent Victory  written by Siringana

Just as the three men approached the top of the hill, the sun began to descend below the horizon. Delta Recon, led by Cpt. Stephen Richards, had been moving all day long through the dense forest and had finally made it to their destined site. The three soldiers situated themselves behind a large, protruding rock as Richards pulled out his binos and began to scan the valley below. As he was searching, he found exactly what he needed and what he feared most: a Soviet invasion force.

" Bingo". he said as he reached for his radio. " HQ, this is Delta Four. We have spotted heavy Soviet traffic in zone 3. I repeat, heavy traffic in zone 3. Looks like two armored divisions accompanied by a regiment of soldiers. Over" . By then, the sun was entirely submerged below the horizon, as it cast a faint light over the valley, reflecting off of the moving convoy below. Richards then sat back down behind the rock, pulling out his canteen to get a cool drink. Little did he know that he himself had just been spotted...

"We break at nightfall" said Richards slouching down against the rock, taking a rest.

As night approached, a silvery moon appeared from behind the clouds, casting a light over the dark valley and surrounding hills. As the trio began to begin their trek back through the dense forest, Richards began to have a bad feeling that tugged at him. He couldn't put his finger on it and that made him on edge. Half way through the trek, they came to a halt, while Richards double checked his gear. The other two soldiers were on point, with their weapons drawn, as a precautionary measure. Then it got quiet. Real quiet. No birds, no trees blowing in the wind, no nothing. Only mind numbing silence fell on the soldiers. Just then, the hairs on the back of Richards neck stood up. And then it happened. A white arc of electricity crackled through the air, striking the two soldiers and propelling Richards a few feet away. Where the two other scouts stood, was now two charred remains smoldering in the forest. Richards tried to get up when a sharp pain coursed through his body, realizing that he had been  paralyzed. A dark, hulking figure appeared out from the shadows, slowly walking past the two burning piles of remains. Richards caught a whiff of the acrid smell of flesh crisping as he was able to make out a symbol upon the figure's head from the flames: a red sickle and hammer. As the figure slowly crept closer to Richards, the right hand appeared to be a gauntlet, which had a faint blue glow while electricity sparked from it.

Just as the figure moved even closer, Richards then identified his attacker: a Tesla trooper. Richards had remembered hearing how these types of soldiers were used in the first war, but never expected to see one in his lifetime. The soldier paced back and forth, apparently studying Richards as a curious doctor studies his patient. Overhead the two, a thunderstorm began to stir, as the moon disappeared behind the billowing clouds. The figure then stopped a moment and took a long look at Richards which seemed to last for eternity.

Richards could no longer take it. "What are you waiting for? Finish it! The figure stood up quickly, as though it were surprised. "Come on! Come on you commie son of  a --". But before Richards could even finish his last words, the soldier's gauntlet turned from a faint blue to a bright white, as a bolt of electricity came forth from the end. The searing energy ripped and coursed through his body, as it burst into flames, spreading light in the immediate area. What was left of Richard's body slumped back down on the ground, smoldering and crackling before the soldier.

It then began to rain, as the rain drops struck the helmet of the now alone soldier. It looked up and then turned to walk away toward the shadows it came from as the thunderstorm raged overheard.....
